Kenneth Earl Wilber, also known as Ken Wilber, was born in Oklahoma on January 31, 1949. Due to his training and subsequent contributions, he became one of the main pillars of transpersonal and integral psychology. Thus, he’s a p rolific writer who’s interested in philosophy, psychology, history, biology, religion, ecology, and mysticism, among other subjects. In short, his knowledge is a widely emerging paradigm.

In addition, he might just be one of the most influential thinkers because his approach represents a new perspective of the world and he tries to go beyond the surface of the hypotheses he manages in his studies. Wilber takes a philosophical approach to various disciplines. He’s currently one of the main researchers on consciousness, transpersonal psychology, and integral psychology.

“I have a body, but I’m not my body. I can see and feel my body, and what can be seen and felt isn’t the true Seer. My body may be tired or excited, sick or healthy, heavy or light, but that has nothing to do with my inward I. I have a body, but I’m not my body.”

Integral psychology and Ken Wilber

A cloud shaped like a face.

Wilber developed a comprehensive theory that encompasses the truths of many different traditions and disciplines. Some of them are:

  • Psychological approaches.
  • Scientific theories.
  • Spiritual traditions.
  • Sociocultural approaches.
  • Philosophical theories.

His model of consciousness seeks the development of a healthy individuality through growth, learning, the empowerment of our abilities, and our connection with nature and with otherness.

In addition, this model suggests that one can reach a state of fullness from the development of consciousness. In addition, this development would help us put suffering aside.

Now, the integral model isn’t exclusive to psychology. Wilber argues that the various theories must embrace, both outside and inside it. That is, he suggests a reconciliation of the various theories and that these could link in favor of human development.

In his theory of the integral model, Wilber defends that one can locate the experience and knowledge of a person in a quadrant of four modules he refers to as Aqal. These quadrants are: intentional, behavioral, cultural, and social.

Works by Ken Wilber

A faceted face.

Wilber’s works are now widely appreciated in different cultures. These are some of them:

  • Integral Psychology. In this book, Wilber presents a summary of the model and his own conception of wholeness. In addition, he describes human growth and development from the different levels at which different pathologies may arise.
  • No Boundary. Here, the author takes a tour of the spectrum of human consciousness. In addition, he also tries to explain the anguish of human beings and the current fracture of our identity.
  • A Brief History of Everything. This is one of the author’s most recent works. In it, he addresses the issues of sex, soul, and spirit, wondering about the place we occupy. In addition, he shows the phases of evolution and addresses current subjects that make us reflect.
  • Eye to Eye. In this book, Wilber analyzes the three realms of knowledge: the empirical realm of the senses, the rational realm of the mind, and the contemplative realm of the spirit.
  • Trump and a Post-Truth World. This is a book based on his own reflections, he questions how we ended up where we are. In addition, it proposes some solutions for closing the current huge social fracture.

Final notes

To conclude, Ken Wilber proposes a tool or a model – broad and deep, based on transcendence – for understanding the world.  He invites us to experience events with his own thoughts, both physical and mental, from another point of view.

This author focuses on particularly important issues. Thus, his theory allows us to address a new paradigm regarding the conception of the universe, to rescue and reconcile traditions and theories. Finally, in the words of Dr. Roger Walsh, an Australian professor of psychiatry:

“Ken Wilber is one of the greatest philosophers of this century, and arguably the greatest theoretical psychologist of all time.”
