5 Incredible Moments We Take for Granted
Every day, amazing things happen that we’re not always aware of. Days that we consider “normal” are full of meaningful moments that turn into mindless routines when we close our eyes to them.
Happiness is such a big word that we associate it with big events and achievements. Because these moments don’t occur very often, we think that happiness comes in large, spaced out doses, and that’s it. But maybe we’re looking at it the wrong way. Maybe happiness isn’t found just in extraordinary events, but also in multiple everyday moments that we often take for granted.
“Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones. “
-Phillips Brooks-
Precious moments
Every day is full of little miracles. However, we seem to think they don’t deserve to be counted because of how predictable or common they are. But when you look at it from another perspective, they have the power to transform your life through a chain of magical moments. Below, we offer a list of some examples that occur every day, right within your reach.
Waking up to a new day
We almost never stop to think about how short life is. Among the millions and millions of years that the universe has existed, our lives are an negligible percentage of that, a mere 60-80 years. It sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t. And most people don’t realize that until they don’t have much time left.
Every day is actually a small miracle. If you wake up under a roof and are able to start the day, you are very fortunate. There are so many people who don’t have that roof, or who can’t get out of bed. You have life, shelter, and health. These are wonderful things that shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Eating and nourishing your body
Eating is much more than putting food in your mouth. For as long as anyone can remember, food has been associated with harmony and peace. Many cultures give thanks to their gods for the opportunity to eat. It’s a time that you should share with people who are important to you.
Eating is also a sensory pleasure. It involves sight, touch, taste, smell, and sometimes even hearing. Regardless of how modest a meal is, it always involves a bit of happiness, because it means you’re fulfilling a need. Eating at the table with other people is an incredible joy, one that you can experience every day, but that you might not always appreciate.
Looking at the person you love
When death takes away our loved ones, we realize that we may have spent a lot of time by their side without recognizing how important they truly were. Every day, we should remember that we have people we love and that the time we have together is limited.
Seeing them alive is a gift in itself, one of those wonderful moments that we sometimes let slip by. Take a few minutes to look at them and to be aware of everything you feel for them. You’ll realize that your life is full of meaning and that love is a gift that makes it even more beautiful.
Using your work to contribute to the world
Work gives you the opportunity to be productive. It doesn’t matter if your job is unassuming or not widely known. Working shows character, honor, and decency.
Many of the most wonderful moments of life occur at work. Putting up with the routine and completing all your tasks shines light on your character and gives meaning to your life. It’s a place where you can design and redesign the path you take. This is why it has so much value, both for yourself and for society in general.
Sleeping and dreaming
The only people who truly know what a luxury sleep is are those who have suffered relentless insomnia. Sleeping deeply is a truly indescribable pleasure. It’s a form of self-care that is invaluable as it’s the basis of good health.
Sleeping and dreaming balances your emotions, rejuvenates your body, and even makes you more intelligent. It allows you to consolidate new information and make sense of what you learned the day before. Sleeping is one of those small everyday miracles that we don’t always truly appreciate.
As you can see, every day is full of amazing moments. Just because most people disregard and ignore them doesn’t mean that they don’t have value. Maybe if you learn to find the hidden wonders behind those everyday moments, you’ll also learn to make your life more than a routine. These moments can leave a lasting mark on you.
