The Girl Who Looked to the Night Sky and Discovered Her Inner Light
This is the story of a girl who looked to the sky, saw the brightness of a star, and discovered her inner light. I confess that this girl was me. This story is inspired by what my mother patiently and lovingly told me as many times as necessary. I will always be grateful to her for teaching me to have the courage to follow my star and value my inner light.
“When you possess light within you, you see it externally.”
-Anais Nin-
Once upon a time, there was a little girl with big blue eyes and dark hair who liked to play with her friends. Her favorite game was hide and seek, and she spent most of her time searching. When she had to hide, she looked for a hiding spot close by because she got tired when she ran far.
She didn’t mind if she “lost”. Her friends would look for very original hiding places: between trees, behind parked cars. Some of them would even trade jackets, trying to cheat… these little things made her laugh.
Then, one day, a new girl joined the group of friends and started teasing the blue-eyed girl for losing. She told her she should find a better, father hiding place. The blue-eyed girl got sad but still kept playing.
Finally, because of the new girl, the blue-eyed girl agreed to hide in the park, far away from where they had started the game. This time, she won the game, but she was so exhausted that she had to stop playing and go home.
As she walked home, her sadness grew and she started to cry. When she came through the door, much earlier than expected, her mother approached her and asked, “Why are you crying, daughter?” The girl explained to her mother what happened with the new girl and hide and seek. She couldn’t stop crying and calling herself different from the other kids. She was lonely.
The brightest star
Her mother took her hand and, without saying anything, they went out to the balcony of their little house. In front of them shone a star. It was the brightest star in the whole sky, but it seemed to be alone. There were no other stars around it. The mother pulled a soft, white handkerchief from her pocket and dried her daughter’s tears. She took the girl’s chin firmly and sweetly and lifted her head, at the same time pointing to the star.
- “See that star?” – The mother asked her daughter, with a smile on her lips.
- “Yes, it’s beautiful and bright.” – The girl answered, interested.
- “That star is you.” – Said the mother very seriously.
- “But mom, isn’t that star lonely?”
- “It’s not alone, it just shines so bright that we can’t see the other stars. But, even though we can’t see them, they’re there.”
- “Do I really have that much light?” – Said the girl, drying the few tears that still were still falling from her eyes and starting to smile.
- “You have so much that some people get scared. But others will love you because of your light. Never stop being you, honey. You are worth so much.”
- “Thanks, Mom. I love you.” – The girl gave her mother a kiss and a big hug.
Remember your inner light
From that day on, whenever she felt sad, her mother would take her to the balcony so she could see the star and remember its light. Little by little, the girl grew up. Then, she learned to go alone to the balcony in search of her star.
Over time, all she had to do was look up and find it. She always found her star and she remembered her light. That girl, now a woman, will never forget that her star is still shining in the sky, lighting her path.
Stories teach us valuable lessons we can draw on when things are hard and we need to push forward to make our dreams come true. In this story, we learn about how we need the darkness in order to see the light.
“In order for the light to shine so brightly, darkness must be present.”
– Francis Bacon-
The stars have always guided humanity when we were lost, like a map in the sky. Their brightness reminds us how small and insignificant we are and, at the same time, how big we are. See, the stars shine more strongly the greater the darkness. They how us that human beings can shine with our own light.
In this story, the girl, thanks to the help of her mother, sees her inner light reflected in the brightness of a star. Don’t let the opinions of others keep you from being you. Live your life.
