Changes in Life Are Good if They're in the Right Direction

Last update: 12 October, 2017

We’ve all been at a point where we thought we’d constructed a comfortable life for ourselves where everything was under control, only for the alarms to suddenly start ringing – small red lights pushing us towards movement so that we didn’t remain stuck in the same place for too long. This is life’s unique way of putting our emotional balance to the test in the face of changes in life.

Changes in life doesn’t wait for anyone. It’s a part of life, and it forces to constantly react. We always feel a bit of discomfort at the start of something new, and we struggle to adapt to it. We’re not used to it, even though it’s been with us since we were born.

“We don’t twice bathe in the same river,
we don’t twice live in the same body,
we don’t twice die the same death.”

-Óscar Hahn-

Given that nothing in existence can last indefinitely, it’s important for us to recognize that everything is perishable. Everything evolves, contrasts, overlaps, and transforms. We have to learn to flow with the changes and find the tools that we need to be as prepared as possible for when they come.

Changes in life are uncomfortable

The most jarring thing about change is its arbitrary and uncertain nature. You can’t predict how long it will last, the consequences that will result, or the energy that you’ll expend trying not to get lost in it.

Change is also uncomfortable because most of the time it’s out of our hands. We don’t have the privilege to decide to stay where we are. In addition, some decisions change our lives, but there are also lives that change our decisions, even if we’re not aware of it.

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

Lao Tzu

But what we can do is face it energetically and courageously and try to adapt to it in the best way possible. Never forget that there’s nothing bad about change as long as you’re moving in the right direction.

Change can make you happy

As I was reflecting on change and everything involved with it, I remembered a piece of dialogue from the movie The Lion King where Rafiki ventures to say that change is good, although it isn’t easy, and sometimes it forces you to confront a painful past.

Of course, we all go through hard times that really affect us, but we need to go through them in order to mature and become stronger. And some changes make us happy. It’s good to take risks so we can keep making progress, set new goals, recognize our flaws, and rethink our values. Change can be positive.

The right direction is always forward

You’re wrong if you’re looking back and thinking that you’re still in the same place. You’re confused if your head is in the clouds and you can’t come down from them to shape your future. You’re mistaken if you don’t teach yourself that the right direction is to start from the here and now and keep looking forward.

“Life isn’t waiting for you anywhere, it’s happening to you. It can’t be found in the future, like a goal you still have to achieve; it’s here and now, right in this moment, in your breathing, in the circulation of your blood, in the beating of your heart. Whatever you are, it’s your life, and if you’re searching for meaning elsewhere, you’ll miss it.”
