Music Can Make It Easier to Get Out of Bed

Music Can Make It Easier to Get Out of Bed

Last update: 28 March, 2017

A stick hitting a stone in rhythmic movements can produce sounds that are pleasing to the ear. We don’t know when it was invented, but we do know that thousands of years ago, philosophers like Plato said that “music is for the soul what gymnastics is for the body.”

Most people today are aware of the therapeutic effects of music, and some even enjoy the benefits of music therapy. A new study from the University of Cambridge has added to the list of benefits by selecting the 20 best songs to get you out of bed. Are you interested in finding out what they are? Well, here we go!

Music can be the best thing to wake you up

This study was lead by psychologist David M. Greenberg, in collaboration with the well-known app Spotify.

For those who don’t know Spotify, it’s a website and mobile app that’s used to listen to music. As you listen to songs, you can choose or skip certain ones, and the app adapts to your tastes and offers you only music that you will like.

Greenberg is a firm believer in the positive physiological and emotional effects of music on human beings. He believes that the right songs can make us more optimistic and energetic throughout the day. He therefore stipulates that a particular song can serve to fill you with positive energy. In this way, you can change the way you face the day and improve your mood immensely.

“He who hears music, feels his solitude peopled at once.”

-Robert Browning-

Greenberg believes that the key to getting out of bed in the morning in a good mood lies in highly rhythmic initial chords. The first verses should build in momentum, but so should the third and fourth bars. That is, the song should maintain a rhythm between 100 and 130 beats per minute. With this progressive increase in rhythm, the mind and body will find the motivation to get up.

In his study, entitled “Wake Up,” Greenberg suggests that getting out of bed is something that depends on the person. However, his research attempts to investigate the effects of music on personality.

For Greenberg, getting out of bed is going from a lethargic state to a state of constant alert. Music has played a fundamental role in the process of human evolution. It serves not only as a means of communication, but also as art of social interaction that also has psychological effects on people. Hence its importance in waking up; it’s a basic part of ourselves.

“Music lifts broken moods and relieves the difficulties that are born of the spirit.”

-Miguel de Cervantes-

This brings us to the list of songs that Greenberg created to help us get out of bed more easily. Because it depends on the person, you can choose the ones that fit best with your personality. Regardless, he created this list according to the capacity he believes each song has to give us energy throughout the day. So it’s not that you have to jump out of bed, startled, but that the songs give you a boost of energy to get up more in tune with yourself.
