Grandparents: Emotional Heroes
“Among all the places in the world, there are always favorites. It doesn’t matter how much you move, how much you travel, or where you are; it’s never a bad time to return. You know very well who your “person homes” are.
Person homes smell like unconditional love and acceptance. They smell like affection, like long hugs where you close your eyes and smile.
For this reason, a person home is the best mirror to look in every day: they always reflect the most real and authentic version of yourself. The most beautiful. They are the light at the end of the tunnel, the support throughout the journey, and the shoulder you can cry on.”
-Repairing Broken Wings-
Our grandparents are person homes, made of steel, unique and irreplaceable. They make us think of joy and tenderness, of hugs, of knowing glances between two people who were made to love each other.
They smell like home, like recently made chestnuts, like respect, like new toys, like magic tricks, like pride and satisfaction, like wet earth after a summer storm, like a cup of hot chocolate on a winter day. They smell like childhood and growth.
Their love and care has helped us build the pillars of our lives, the values of respect, of maturity, of temperance, of care and protection.
Their wise looks have been etched in our minds, along with the depth of their words and teachings, the unfinished games, the emotional challenges, the kisses that could heal any pain, and the candy bar in the afternoon.
Memories of an infinite love
“Can you imagine if life were like a game of tag? Well, grandparents would be home base.”
–Adaptation of Elvira Sastre–
Grandparents make the life of a child exceptional. They symbolize everything that is worth snuggling, feeling the warmth of loving arms that are always welcoming. They are the best at bandaging a scraped knee. They are a breath that soothes, and a hug that makes us whole again.
They caught us breaking rules with the calm of someone who knows their role very well. And they educated us with the wisdom of age and the satisfaction of continuity. From the moment we were born, we became their comrades, their playmates, and the joy of their thoughts.
Deepening our roots
“Surely, two of the most satisfying experiences in life must be those of being a grandchild or a grandparent.”
-Donald A. Norberg-
Grandparents are wonderful because they listen and show genuine interest in what you have to say. Sometimes, the perfect love doesn’t arrive until one has grandchildren.
A grandparent is someone with silver in their hair and gold in their heart. Their emotional wealth dyes our history with warm colors, with indelible traces, with charisma and love. Our grandparents have showed us that there are no barriers to love, and that affection is beyond measure.
Grandparents are basically old children, magicians who create marvelous worlds, fun in disguise, the violation of rules, the best toy in the world. Our grandparents are one of the best treasures that we’ll find in life. For this reason, it’s important that we are faithful to our roots and that we never forget what their existence and their participation in our lives gave to us.
If you’ve had the good fortune of sharing your life with your grandparents, take advantage of every wink they give you, every memory you make with them. Share the values that they gave you. Give high importance to respect, love, and the care of the ephemeral and trivial.
If it is now your turn to be a grandparent, ensure that your grandchildren remember you with affection. Never forget about them, keep them alive and present in every day. Let the voice of experience and genuineness speak from within you.
