4 Ways to Fight Mediocrity
Mediocrity is an attitude and a lifestyle choice. It isn’t bad because it’s a defect, it’s bad because you are allowing yourself to do the minimum acceptable amount. You are choosing to not do something, not take a risk, not discover, not try, not mess up, not see and not find.
Someone who has allowed themselves to remain in the shadow of mediocrity simply doesn’t reach their full potential, because they aren’t striving beyond their comfort zone.
When you choose to stay in mediocrity, you also choose to hide your abilities and your talents and you let many opportunities pass you by. You accept the job that was available, although it doesn’t really live up to your expectations. Your relationship turned monotonous and all of the potential you have is wasted for the sake of comfort…
Choosing to be mediocre may be easier than going out into the world after your dreams. The latter implies putting in effort that won’t give you immediate positive results. But it is much better to go out and take a risk than to live a life that doesn’t satisfy you. If you are set on changing your life, read on and discover some ways to beat mediocrity.
1. Set a goal or dream to accomplish
I think that when we are lacking a dream or a goal to accomplish, mediocrity can settle easily into our lives. That’s why there is no better medicine than thinking of something that you want to accomplish and starting to work towards it. Any dream counts. From traveling some place far away that you are drawn to, to starting your own business. What would you like to do?
If you don’t have a dream now, and you also have no idea what one could be, think of some activity that you would like to do. Once you have found your dream, the next question is if you have the courage to make it come true. Mediocrity will tell you you can’t do it. It will tell you that it is complicated or that it will take you a very long time to accomplish, but you must analyze if that is truly what you want to do or not.
If you truly desire it, create a route to achieve this objective. Remember to dream big and accomplish this dream with small actions. A little step every day is more effective than just one big action per month.
2. Interact with different people that inspire you
If you interact with mediocre people, you’ll think and behave just like they do. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you to end all of your relationships. But it would be good for you to include people into your life that inspire you.
Give yourself the opportunity to get to know and include into your life people who have accomplished the things you desire. You’ll see how you will slowly start to change your way of seeing the world, and you will learn to see opportunities to achieve your dreams.
3. Forge your own path
Have you ever noticed that the people who achieve the greatest goals are the ones who strayed from the normal patterns? When you follow the same steps that everyone else is taking, you can’t expect different results. Dare to take a path less traveled by, and which might have more setbacks and shortcomings.
You will not see positive results right away, but once they start to appear, they will be incredible. Try to change your mentality, and don’t let fear beat you when others tell you that you are going to make a mistake or do something wrong. Remember that each one of us must follow our own path.
4. Take risks although people may think you are crazy
A life without risks is very boring and will sink you into mediocrity. It is good to focus on the job that lets you pay the bills every month, but surely there’s more to life out there.
What you should avoid is trying to escape every situation that could get out of your control. Take advantage of every moment that you could do something new.
Remember that I mentioned having a dream or a goal? Well, surely in the process of accomplishing what you set out for yourself, you will find people that will tell you it is impossible. Regardless of what the goal may be, there will always be pessimists or people that let their dreams wither away out of fear and now are trying to get you to do the same. Don’t fall for it. Even if you make a mistake, it is better to try something new than to be left with the uncertainty and doubt of what would have happened.
You weren’t born to be mediocre
Each one of us has unique skills and qualities and have a lot to contribute to the world. However, many people become stuck in what is easy and choose to not move beyond that.
Don’t be one of those people. You, just like the rest of the world, came into the world to do something special. Maybe right now you don’t know what it is, or you don’t truly believe in it, but it is the truth. You just need to find it and take the next step towards it.
