Beat the Fear That Keeps You From Trying Something New

Beat the Fear That Keeps You From Trying Something New

Last update: 23 June, 2017

Oftentimes, changes can scare us. This happens because we pass from a situation of balance and control to one that’s completely new, stirred by new things. Everything that’s unknown and unpredictable provokes a lot of fear. Will it all turn out okay? What is going to happen? Will I be successful? That fear that’s talking tries to make us stay within our comfort zones. It emerges whenever we set out to start something new.

We have a great ability to be flexible and bend in the face of change. However, fear is always the first one to speak up.

Transform your fear into motivation

Every time something frightens us, we take various steps backwards or, at the very least, we remain still. Maybe this is a learned behavior. However, we could do exactly the opposite. Does it sound like pure insanity to you? Maybe it is. What we are sure about is that fear will be the best motivation you’ll find to push yourself and take giant steps forwards. It’s an emotion and therefore it is energy. From this point forth, you decide what you invest it in.

I encourage you to mentally travel to the past, to one of the times you had no other choice but to do something while you were scared. It might be that time you were terrified about presenting your project in front of all those people. You had no other choice. What did you do with the fear, then? You accepted it and gathered up all of that shame, doubt, worries and hesitations in order to carry out that which made you so nervous. When you feel that much fear and have no other choice but to face it, you start using it in your favor.

The attitude of a winner

Having that attitude will also allow you to confront your difficulties in another way. Because all of us find it exhausting to have to deal with problems and barriers. Stones in our path which produce setbacks for our purposes and progress. However, you focus entirely too much on all of those setbacks, giving them too much importance.

The negative things in life always have a great deal of importance. So much so that it is capable of pushing aside all of the good you have accomplished.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life

Leave what has already happened behind you, abandon your thoughts of the future. Today is the first day of the rest of your life, and it deserves a special importance. Focus on the present and take advantage of it to the fullest. Think that tomorrow doesn’t exist, that today is your only opportunity to give it your all. If you get stuck in your fears and doubts, this day will be a waste.

You’re the one responsible for the life you have, so don’t make yourself out to be the victim. If you don’t trust in the process, you won’t arrive where you want to go. Starting something new can be scary, since many times we want to run ahead of time. We aren’t realistic. We don’t see the work that it is going to take, the effort that we are going to have to put in. Our expectations turn against us when we initiate our path.

Make sure your goals are possible

Before starting something new, make sure that it is feasible to achieve. That way you wont have to deal with crushing that hope you had in the beginning. Afterwards, always keep your motivation high. Sometimes it will want to abandon you, that’s why you have to keep your eye on the prize. That is the only thing that will make your motivation stick around.

“Step out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel uncomfortable when you try something new.”
-Brian Tracy-

Remember that today is the only day that matters. You won’t get another chance or opportunity. What you do today will shape everything that is to come. That comfort zone, those fears, those doubts, all of that shame won’t do you any good if you don’t confront them. It will only become useful when you overcome them, because they only exist so that you can begin something new right away.
