What Is Emotional Fatigue?

· March 1, 2016

Do you know what it feels like to suffer from chronic stressWhen it seems like stress will never go away, it turns into emotional fatigue.

Anxiety, depression, and stress can make us feel extreme exhaustion that affects our lives in many ways, due to a lack of energy that we can’t recuperate.

When fatigue takes power over your mind, your energy abandons your body and it produces a feeling of weakness that’s hard to eliminate.

Highly empathetic and sensitive people are usually the ones who suffer from this kind of fatigue. It exhausts all of our emotional resources, leaving us with nothing to give other people.

But how does it really develop? Why does it appear? Here are some responses and possible solutions:

Do you suffer from emotional fatigue?

If you’re asking yourself this question, you’ve probably been through some of the things we’ve mentioned: stress, depression, anxiety.

But usually, people who suffer from emotional fatigue aren’t aware of their symptoms. Why does this happen?

Emotional fatigue results in demotivation such that we avoid and reject our own emotions.

In spite of this, we can’t avoid seeing how this fatigue manifests physically and psychologically:

  • Lack of motivation and interest
  • Loss of energy
  • Low tolerance for stress or stressful situations
  • A feeling of depersonalizationin which you feel strange in your own skin and your surroundings
  • Difficulty concentrating or paying attention

Emotional fatigue can cause much more serious problems, at the level of personal wellbeing as well as interpersonal relationships.

Although depression is a possible cause, this fatigue can also cause depressive states in people who don’t suffer from depression, as well as a feeling of losing control.

“There are moments in life in which the only alternative is to lose control.”

-Paulo Coelho-

We should take care of ourselves and know how to identify it when it appears. Why? So we can alert ourselves to much more serious problems, like profound depression, occupational burnout, and other serious issues.

Overcome your emotional fatigue

There are many solutions to emotional fatigue. Once we’ve realized that we suffer from it, instead of denying and rejecting it, it’s time to get down to work and get rid of the stress that has caused it.

But how can we free ourselves from all that stress and anxiety, two things that affect us the most and cause us so many problems?

Here’s some advice:

  • Physical exercise can be an escape from your mind and the stress that you suffer from.
  • Eating healthy can positively influence your emotional well-being.
  • Getting good sleep is a big step towards freedom from stress.
  • Practicing mindfulness can be very useful for understanding and managing your emotions.

These are just a few pieces of advice that you can follow that will bring you much closer to solving this problem.

Mindfulness is highly recommended these days because it uses many different tools that let you disconnect from everything that causes you stress and tension.

On top of that, this practice allows you to reflect on yourself, which is called “self-reflection,” and discover what is chaining you to emotional fatigue.

To overcome emotional fatigue, we must first be aware of what is causing it. If you are a highly sensitive or empathetic person and you’re wondering whether you suffer from emotional fatigue, pay attention, because a much more serious problem could be behind it.

Luckily, if it’s caused by stress, it can be solved with the advice that we previously mentioned. We hope that it will help you put an end to the extreme emotional fatigue that affects all areas of your life.
