Letter to My Future Self

Letter to My Future Self

Last update: 02 March, 2018

I’m writing this letter to my future self because I don’t want the memory of these feelings to fade with time. When my future self has had lots of experiences, I want her to take this letter and stop and think. If we don’t know where we come from or who we were, how is it possible to know where we are going or what we want?

I just want my future self to take a breath, pause, and reflect…

Letter to my future self – I don’t want you to forget

Dear self, I don’t want you to forget all of the things that make you happy today. That’s why I am writing to you. This letter is a projection into the infinite, and I hope that you keep going to bed every night with a smileWhether it’s because of the friends you have, or the work you do, or the social life you keep. Maybe it’s that you always fight for what you want, or your hobbies make you happy. I hope, by the way, that you haven’t given them up. Or if you have, that you’ve found even better substitutes.

Girl writing to future self

I’m sure that when you read this letter, traveling down memory lane will be a happy experience. That’s wonderful! Hold on to that. Don’t let the passing of the years change the emotions or the expression on your face. I want you, future self, not to lose yourself in bitter temptations or shrink in the face of difficulty.

Future self, in this letter I want to tell you the dreams I have, the aspirations that wake me up and motivate me every day. When you are reading this, see if you have gotten what you wanted. If you haven’t, be smart. Keep going and keep trying if your strength and conviction allow you to. Otherwise, be satisfied with what you’ve learned. Remember that an experience only becomes a failure if we try to erase it and reject the opportunity it offered to teach us something.

Dear self…

I don’t want to forget everything that I feel today, and I don’t want you to forget either. This letter is the key to remembering. I’m writing to you during a happy time (it’s not just melancholy that inspires my words.) Don’t forget your tools and everything that has gotten you to this point. Make the most of your enthusiasm and goodwill, but don’t abuse it. If you abuse it, that means you are doing something that doesn’t fulfill you. Be inspired, and keep going. And remember, many of the clouds casting shadows on the horizon aren’t real.

Don’t forget that projects need time, people need time, work needs time. Fortunately, you are the one in control of your time, and not the other way around (contrary to popular belief.) Own your time and give it meaning. Don’t let it simply pass you by. History is filled with moments like these.

In this letter, you will find the adventures you’ve lived, the things that make yourself proud of who you are today. Above all, you’ll find what makes you special and different. You are unique, and I want you to keep being that way. If you aren’t, and you aren’t smiling right now, stop and think about what you want and where you are going. Don’t let getting older stifle the girl in you. I am writing to her today, too.

Future self, I want you to…

I want you, future self, not to forget your roots. That’s why I am writing to you. Remember everything that came before. Don’t just appreciate the people by your side who are making this journey with you. enjoy them! If you are thinking about someone you lost contact with who used to be a part of your life, call them! Tell them you appreciate the place that they occupy in your memory and your smile.

In this letter to my future self, my whole essence is alive with desires and hopes. Here is my will to carry on, my desire to keep learning. I don’t want them to get lost along the way. If they have, try to find them again. Don’t let the wind decide what your destiny will be.

I hope that you, future self, have been able to grow and adapt without losing yourself along the way. I want to write another letter to my future self. To show her that there truly are dreams that are worthwhile. Whether they are imaged, planned, lived, or not yet material. Live!
